Pada tahun ini Kalender Gregorian secara efektif mulai dipakai. Pada tanggal 24 Februari keputusan sudah diambil oleh Paus Gregorius XIII dan pada hari Sabtu tanggal 4 Oktober berlaku. Esoknya hari Minggu sudah menjadi tanggal 15 Oktober, sehingga tahun 1582 tidak memiliki 9 hari, dari tanggal 5 - 14.
Insiden Honnoji di Kyoto dimana Oda Nobunaga dikhianati oleh orang kepercayaannya sendiri, Akechi Mitsuhide. Nobunaga melakukan bunuh diri setelah terkepung rapat dalam kuil Honno.
