Der Landkreis Sonthofen gehörte zum bayerischen Regierungsbezirk Schwaben.

Bis zu seiner Auflösung hatte der Landkreis (Kfz-Kennzeichen SF) 37 Gemeinden. Die größten Orte waren Sonthofen, Immenstadt, Oberstdorf und Blaichach.

Am 1. Juli 1972 wurde der Landkreis Sonthofen im Zuge der Gebietsreform in Bayern mit dem Landkreis Kempten zum neuen Landkreis Oberallgäu zusammengefasst. Die Stadt Kempten selbst blieb kreisfrei und wurde durch Eingemeindungen noch vergrößert.
