Jamestown auf St. Helena.

Jamestown ist die Hauptstadt von St. Helena. Die Stadt hat ca. 850 Einwohner (Stand: 1998).

Jamestown wurde 1659 von der britischen Ostindien-Kompanie gegründet. Sie wurde als Fort angelegt und nach dem Duke von York, James II., benannt.

Die Stadt besteht eigentlich nur aus einer Hauptstraße und dem Anlegeplatz für Schiffe, welche sich eine Meile lang durch ein Tal zieht. Sie ist umgeben von steilen Klippen. Von 1967 - 23. Oktober 1999 sendete von Jamestown aus Radio St. Helena. Es gibt inzwischen Bestrebungen den Sender zu reaktivieren.
