Auftauboden wird die im Polarsommer aufgetaute und teilweise stark wasserdurchtränkte Schicht des Permafrostbodens genannt.

Der Auftauboden taut in unterschiedlicher Mächtigkeit auf, abhängig vom Boden- und Gesteinsmaterial und von der Zusammensetzung der Vegetationsdecke.

Häufig ist der Auftauboden so stark mit Feuchtigkeit getränkt, dass es zur Solifluktion oder zur Kryoturbation kommt.

Die Mächtigkeit des Auftaubodens beträgt zum Pol hin nur wenige Zentimeter, erreicht in Sibirien mehrere Meter Dicke, bis hin zu einer Mächtigkeit von 20 bis 40 Metern.
