Der Aland ist ein linker Nebenfluss der Elbe, der mit seinen Zuflüssen große Teile der nördlichen Altmark entwässert.

Sein Oberlauf, die Milde, entspringt nahe Letzlingen, südlich von Gardelegen, in seinem Mittellauf heißt er Biese, die bei Osterburg (Altmark) die von Stendal kommende Uchte aufnimmt. Etwa ab Seehausen (Altmark) trägt der Fluss den Namen Aland. Im Unterlauf wechselt der Aland aus der Altmark in den Landkreis Lüchow-Dannenberg, wo er nach circa 2 km bei Schnackenburg in die Elbe mündet. Der größte Teil der Fließstrecke befindet sich innerhalb des Elbe-Urstromtals.

Der als „Aland“ bezeichnete Flussabschnitt ist ungefähr 27 km lang, der Gesamtfluss (Milde-Biese-Aland) ungefähr 97 km.
